Movie Mondays!

X-fans will not be disappointed by this action packed flick that touches all the bases. The comic book geek in me loved this Origin tale featuring Hugh Jackman reprising the role of Wolverine. The movie stays remarkably true to the characters’ history and where it veers off, it does so in an intelligent way given the limitations of film. There’s quite the array of familiar characters too: Deadpool, Sabretooth, the Blob and Cyclops just to name a few. There are even a few surprises appearances thrown in for good measure as well that will have fans leaving the theater smiling. Not the best as these kind of films go but still entertaining and fun... and definitely worth catching!

Mar 18, 2011

A very important anniversary.

You know, it’s been very quiet around here for reasons I will divulge another day but tonight I had the chance to look in on the blog and see what has been publishing (yes, much of the posts were done awhile ago when I had more free time and scheduled to post so there is regular content around these parts). Still I like to fill in around things and while I was watching The Pretenders video that went up earlier this week, I found myself looking up more old videos I have fond memories of.

And to that end I realized we are coming up on a very significant date...

The date is August 1st 1981 – 30 years on we may forget what the world was like in those days. Certainly there are many who can’t even begin to fathom how different a place the world was just three short decades ago.

No one had cell phones – if you wanted to make a call and you weren’t home you had to find a pay phone, you had better have some change and also you had better hope someone was home because answering machines were just starting to appear on the market (voicemail was a dream of some engineer’s).

There were no personal computers (don’t even imagine a laptop).

Internet? Yeah, it was there for a few Universities and for the Military but there wasn’t any web.

Cable? Some people had cable. Most people just had broadcast TV though and there wasn’t much in the way of 24 hours of entertainment. If you lived in New York you were lucky because you had a wealth of channels - 2 (WCBS), 4 (WNBC), 5 (WNEW - MetroMedia), 7 (WABC), 9 (WOR), 11 (WPIX) and 13 (WNET). Maybe you got some channels on UHF if you could manage to twist the antenna enough but if you were one of the fortunate you had gotten something that had come in and was starting to take hold in the last couple of years... cable.

And on August 1st, 1981 everything changed. Not just for TV either but, for radio and for music and it all started with this:

Anyone who loves Stanley Kubrick’s films will find this enlightening and comprehensive retrospective of his career entertaining. Starting from childhood through the completion of Eyes Wide Shut, this biopic doesn't miss a beat. Kubrick stands alone as a director having birthed some of the most unique and stunning films of the last half century but yet he remains an enigma to many. Via both interviews and clips of the director’s work Kubrick’s life is laid bare; from his early love of photography, to his first attempts at film and his life as a quiet family man once he achieved success. I found this biography highly engaging and recommend it to any lover of Kubrick’s work or the medium of film.

You know it’s March 14th and all you girls should know what that means...
You know the drill. Every 14th of February you get the chance to display your fondness for a significant other by showering her with gifts, flowers, dinner, shows and any other baubles that women find romantic. Every Valentines day you rack your brains for that one special, unique gift that will show your wife or girlfriend that you really do care for them more than any other. Now ladies, I’ll let you in on a little secret; guys really don’t enjoy this that much. Sure seeing that smile on your face when we get it right is priceless, but that smile is the result of weeks of blood, sweat and consideration. Another secret; guys feel left out. That’s right, there’s no special holiday for the ladies to show their appreciation for the men in their life. Men as a whole are either too proud or too embarrassed to admit it.

Time to show the man in your life just how much he means to you.

A fascinating glimpse into the world of competitive gaming – not gaming as we come to use the word today but instead, those very special video games a generation grew up with and which were so widely popular in the 80s. Yes, there really is quite a subculture here and it’s a very competitive one at that, as rivals jockey for position and upstaging one and other is the norm. No, it won’t earn a living for any of the people obsessed with these games but it makes for one interesting story. Quite entertaining.

If you haven't seen the series, you’ll be a little lost - it’s not the going to play as well to the uninitiated but for fans of the show, it's great to see these characters return for another go. Unfortunately Laura Harris who played Daisy in the series couldn't return (she’s played by Sarah Wynter) and Mandy Patinkin isn’t back. I missed both but still enjoyed the film quite a bit. Enough to give it a high recommendation but only for fans of the show. I'm hoping the film does well too because it's good to see these characters back.

Matt Murdock has just finished making his closing argument in a court case against one of the minions of the crime boss known as Crime Wave, his first job as special assistant to the district attorney. After the jury goes to deliberate the verdict, Matt reflects back to the events that led to this turn of events.Flashing back to the night he revealed his identity to Karen Page, he proposed to her and she accepted. Returning to New York, Matt revealed that he "survived" the plane crash that apparently took his life (making up a fake story for the press) and being appointed special assistant to the D.A.Matt promises to Karen that after making an appearance at the United Fund Parade, he would be retiring his identity of Daredevil for good so that Karen wouldn't fear for his safety. However, before DD can announce his retirement the parade is interrupted when it's attacked by the Stunt-Master – A washed up stunt motorcyclist who is hired by Crime Wave to take out Daredevil. After quickly defeating Stunt-Master, when asked what his special announcement was by Foggy, Daredevil says it was nothing, which upset Karen to the point that she walked away from the scene. Returning to the present the jury finds the crook working for Crime Wave guilty. Although it's a victory for Matt, Karen is still mad at him for not retiring his DD identity as he promised.

This page is the classic courtroom scene featuring Matt, Foogy, Karen and Willy. In the lower left panel there is a patch (the judge). A Romita fix?

There are a lot of things comics fans take for granted these days. One of those things is how a single artist could be so strongly identified with a character. So much so that you really couldn’t think of that character without thinking of the artist.

Long before Frank Miller came along, Gene Colan was THE Daredevil guy. As a matter of fact as much as I liked the Frank Miller run at the time it came out, I find I like it a lot less as so many have come down the road since trying to be Frank Miller, taking the elements he introduced and bastardizing them to such an extent that it’s no longer fun to read Daredevil.

Back when Gene Colan was drawing DD, the book was more about Matt Murdock’s life as a lawyer in a law office with his pal Foggy Nelson and the beautiful, wistful secretary whose love he could never bring himself to acknowledge even though he felt as strongly for her as she for him.

In this instance, I remember buying this in a basement of all places!

There used to be these regular ‘comic events’ (I wouldn’t call them cons) held on a monthly basis in a church basement on the west side of Manhattan round about 57th and 9th.

Albert Moy was in attendance and he had the page for sale and I couldn’t resist. I’ve never been sorry for buying it and it made up a little for passing on another Gene Colan page I could have bought from the owner of St Marks Comics a bunch of years earlier.

The great thing about this page (which you can’t really see) is the patch.

Yep, there’s actually a part of the page where there is an art correction on one of the faces and my bet would be it was done by none other than Jazzy John Romita himself who at the time was the main person responsible for such fixes.

Also, there are great notes in the margin in non-repro blue regarding story elements. These are no doubt notes from Stan the Man himself!

So, the thing is a bit of a treasure. Who knows, maybe one day...

The Wachowski brothers do a terrific job bringing this franchise to fruit as a live-action movie. While much of the film is "green-screened" it works well here in only because it is in keeping with the feel of the original cartoon. It's a piece of fluff to be sure but even so it winds up being the kind of movie everyone in the family can enjoy!

The issue begins with Eddie Brock/Venom being ambushed in a grave yard and then moves on to Peter hanging out with his friends and mulling over his lack of cash. As they leave the apartment they are interrupted by a very intense Arthur Stacy, who warns his daughter (Pete's friend Jill) and then his son to go into hiding, but they all think he's paranoid. Though Peter uses the fuss to slip a Spider tracer in his jacket to follow him later as Spider-man and find out what's really going on.This page is the confrontation between Arthur Stacy and Peter Parker

I’ve loved JRjr’s work for a long time now.

I wasn’t a big fan of his Iron Man stuff early on - it was good but he certainly hadn’t developed the style he’s known for today.

I would think that happened over his run on Spider Man and I can clearly remember seeking out those issues at the time. I know back then I was still living in one of the boroughs and I have a clear memory of taking one of the Express Buses back up and gleefully making my way through the latest issue of ASM.

Over the years I would follow him which each new book and I know I really enjoyed the Daredevil mini he did as well as the two issue Cable mini both of which don’t seem to garner much attention.

Hell’ I even have all three issues of the Contest of Champions!

So, when the chance came to get a Romita page came I couldn’t pass it up and the bonus of course is that it has Peter Parker on it. I’ve heard since that JR jr pages are harder to come by so I’m glad I got this one when I could.

ELVIS IS KING!

I just keep looking around for music I like and finding it in a variety of places. Here’s a favorite song of mine. I really do love ELVIS! Great story behind this and one of the more interesting moments in live TV (which I remember having the good fortune to catch when it was broadcast because it was buried for a long time afterward).

On 17 December 1977, Costello and The Attractions appeared as the musical guest act on the episode of Saturday Night Live as a last minute fill-in for the Sex Pistols. Scheduled to play “Less Than Zero,” he surprised the SNL crew by abruptly stopping the song mid-intro, and launching into “Radio Radio.” This stunt helped ensure he would not appear on the show again until 1989.

You know the funny thing is, what happened really is quintessential punk and second Radio, Radio is a way better song live than Less Than Zero

After Superman destroys some remote-controlled tanks rampaging through Metropolis, the Legionnaires arrive, telling him about C.O.M.P.U.T.O., presumably the cause of the tanks, and recruiting him to help them. C.O.M.P.U.T.O. attempts to delay the heroes by affecting jet planes at an air show, but the heroes save the planes. Brainiac 5 deduces that the tanks were actually controlled by Lex Luthor, taking advantage of C.O.M.P.U.T.O.’s reign of terror, but when Superman and the Legionnaires confront him, C.O.M.P.U.T.O. destroys Brainiac 5’s proof.

This page is of the confrontation between Superman and Luthor with members of the legion of Superheroes (Brainiac 5, Spark; Triad; Shvaughn Erin; Koko) in attendance.

This is a fun piece if only because it has a few of those very iconic characters - you’ve got Lex Luthor figuring prominently on the page but you’ve also got The Legion as well as a ‘blue’ Man of Steel.

A really good documentary about a decades-old rape during the Hollywood heyday of the big studios. As much a commentary on the abuses inherent when any large corporation is the main source of revenue for a community as much as the act (the rape) itself. The surprising thing is how the story has remained virtually untold for so very long. A really solid film.

Feb 6, 2011

Another first.

Life is all about irony. Just when you get comfortable with something, fate comes along and gives you a nice bitchslap upside yrou head to make sure you’re paying attention and to wake you up.

So last week when I was waxing about Alzheimer’s, a terrible disease that I’ve seen take Madame X’s grandmother (who was just a wonderful, terrific and special person) and has been the thing my Aunt has suffered from it for these last 8 years or so. She finally succumbed in her battle.

I hadn’t seen my Aunt in quite some time the last time being a birthday party for her at the home she was residing in coming up on three years back now. How three years passed so quickly, I can’t tell you but I would always ask after her whenever I get together with my cousins.

The thing was there was really nothing new to report. She was at the home and they would go see her but the woman she was, the person she had been was long gone – Elvis has left the building.

I can’t say I was particularly close to my Aunt, I can’t say I had heart to hearts with her or anything like that but she and my Uncle opened up their home to me each and every holiday over the course of my lifetime and I have to say it was a welcome island of stability in what was otherwise the sea of chaos most of my life has been.

I was talking to a relative the other day and I commented on how we would spend every Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter and other celebratory occasions over my Aunt and Uncle’s house and normally while we would be enjoying the meal, conversation, each other - they were in the kitchen making or fussing over things making it nice for everyone.

In Judaism (although we are none of us Jewish) there is a term: Mitzvah. On Wikipedia it is described as such: The secondary menaing of Mitzvah refers to a moral deed performed as a religious duty. As such, the term mitzvah has also come to express an act of human kindness.

That was my Uncle and Aunt, they were kind people.

So getting back to my Aunt though...

Even after she got sick, when the family would get together I would make it a point to sit and talk with her, even though most of these conversations would be circular in nature. I would want to engage her, if only to show her some respect and appreciation for all the nice things she had done for me through the years. But watching her take that final step and become nothing more than an empty shell was hard, I didn’t want to see that.

And as hard as it may have been for me, I can only imagine how hard it was for my cousins and the struggle they went through dealing with it.

So, the other day when the post about the Elvis Costello song Veronica went live (written a bunch of days in advance) and I wrote about people who just weren’t there anymore, one of the people I was talking about was my Aunt and then the very next day she was gone.

And I got the news via email and I can’t say it hit me at first other than to think it was a bit of a good thing because she wouldn’t endure this living death anymore. And when I read it, I can’t say I felt anything other than relief but then when I spoke to my cousins later in the day it hit and even now it hits and I found myself tearing up and crying.

And I think for a lot of us that was the kind of reaction. We were glad her suffering was over but the flip side was she wasn’t here anymore. And it made me realize that even though I didn’t see her and even for my cousins or their families there was a comfort in her still being here. There was simply by default of her being alive a connection to that beautiful past we all shared and that connection was still very much alive but with her passing it is gone and now shuffles over into the realm of memory.

I know everyone is going to miss her.

I know I will.

And that first?

Well, now is the first time I am a pallbearer and while it is not something I welcome because of what it means, I am glad to do it because it gives me that one last opportunity to do something for someone who had done so very much for me.
And now, for something completely different...

Abominations_i03_p20_Medina-Vancata
A follow-up tale from the Incredible Hulk storylines “Ghosts of the Past” and Future Imperfect, in the past, the Abomination scolds the homeless people he protects for venturing up to the surface as Betty #6 goes into labor with her child and Char lies dying in the underground tunnels. Po, a large rebel who had been knocked unconscious during the fight with the Police, awakens and is instantly angered by the site of the Abomination of the past. He grabes a pipe and attacks the Abomination, who shrugs off the attack and flings Po across the tunnel. Meanwhile, Shulk arrives in the past in great pain. Kaspin senses something wrong with her brain, but Shulk shrugs it off and burrows underground to find Betty #6. Shulk finds the underground tunnels and is confronted by the past Abomination. Shulk and the past Abomination do battle, and she succeeds in smashing him through the tunnel. The rebels attack Shulk to protect the baby, but are quickly defeated. She is poised to kill Betty #6, who informs Shulk that the baby is not actually the Maestro's. Betty #6 tells Shulk that it was a lie simply to save herself and the rebels from the mutates. Shulk hesitates, but is still ready to kill them when she suddenly collapses. Kaspin is the cause of her collapse, as he cannot allow her to kill a helpless baby. The Abomination smashes back into the tunnel only to find Shulk near death. Shulk calls the Abomination over to her and whispers something to him that only he can hear before she dies.

ELVIS IS KING!

I just keep looking around for music I like and finding it in a variety of places. Here’s a favorite song of mine. I really do love ELVIS!

I couldn’t exactly tell you why but this song always seems to make me tear up and cry. I think it is one of the most amazingly beautiful songs I’ve ever heard because of the story told by its lyrics. Maybe too, having lost a few people through the years, it makes me think of them and think about how they weren’t always old. The other thing I realize now is having seen a few people succumb to the horror of Alzheimer’s disease, there is something in here that touches on that lost bit of personal history and how important those stories ultimately are.

Aside from the fact I like Matthew Perry and Allison Janney this reminds me so very much of a specific time in my life when I worked at Madison Square Garden.

Has it really been that long?

Today I was talking to someone who is coming to visit me and the fact is the person in question is traveling a great distance (from Europe) to visit so I’m doing that preliminary work that is necessary if one wants to be a good host. While this involves a tremendous effort on my part making my space at least presentable it also entails planning out an itinerary and also stocking some creature comforts just to ease the transition for another person.

And in the course of the conversation, we got to talking about travel.

There was a period in my life when I traveled quite a bit. I traveled all over the United States and also down to the Caribbean and Europe. I found for the most part I had quite a bit of fun and certainly looking back I have glossed over the bumpy spots with a hazy memory to make the trips even better than they actually were.

Trips are always an adventure for me and I really did like travel but I haven't done much of it in a long time.

So, I was asked when the last time I took a trip was and I know I’ve gone on one or two overnight jaunts but I really had to give it some thought and I realized probably the last trip I took was with Madame X to pass New Year down in Key West.

If you haven’t been to Key West (and I haven’t in a long time) it (was) a wonderful place although it had gotten built up quite a bit since the first time I had gone down and that was a bit to its detriment and I can only imagine since it has gotten even more built up.

When was that trip?

I think it was New Year 2004, SEVEN YEARS AGO! What the hell happened? Where did the time go? SEVEN YEARS, in the blink of an eye!

Just another thing I have to work on.
Tuesday RSA.

Design freaks... this is a NOT MISS FILM! If you have a love of typography you will find yourself riveted by the story behind the ubiquitous Helvetica. This documentary features interviews with many people responsible for designing a bulk of the typefaces we encounter and use in our daily lives. Even the casual viewer will find parts of this film fascinating as it details the story of something you cannot help to encounter over the course of your daily travels. Helvetica has become so prevalent as a means of conveying information and meaning we can hardly imagine a world where it did not exist, but the story of how it came to be is as important as the font is itself. A wonderful film!
